Former Three Lions star Wayne Rooney would be eligible to play in January with Derby as player-coach. He is billed to have his Derby debut against Barnsley on January 2nd even though he has been with the crew in the dugout on matchdays.
The 34-year old keeps insisting he is a player but one with a future career as a coach or manager. He said he was working on his ‘A’ license after the Christmas. Upon completing that in July then he would proceed for the Pro License.
He reiterated that his focus remains playing for the club, with the coaching experience handy when he wants to switch to management.
Rooney spoke about his lovefor the game, watching and talking about football. However, in his capacity as player-coach, he would have the privilege of having an opinion with the other coaches. He spoke lovingly of the Derby manager Phillip Cocu.
He said Cocu has been helpful and open to listening to him about the club affairs. He added that he would keep playing for Derby for as long as he is physically fit. While admitting he is different from the player he was in his 20s, he said he remains in good shape and would play until his body advises against it. He said he has no major muscle or knee injuries for a while now so he is ready to give his all for Derby.
Rooney follows the path of Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and other ex-England footballers in coaching.
