Phil Jones believes that people should not just look up to Wayne Rooney

Manchester United defender Phil Jones believes that people should not just look up to Wayne Rooney as a striker whose main job is to score goals.

Instead, he sees several good qualities within the former Everton striker that would help the team in several aspects. Jones was speaking ahead of the international friendly matches for England. After having comfortably qualified for the Euro 2016, the team will be looking to march ahead in style by winning the friendly matches as well. These matches also provide manager Roy Hodgson with the option of testing out some new players.

England appeared to be extremely strong in the striking department due to the presence of Wayne Rooney and Daniel Sturridge. They were complemented by young players like Harry Kane, who were scoring for fun last season. This time around, it is a completely different story with Rooney struggling for form. Sturridge has been in and out of the team for almost 18 months. Kane only recently ended his goal drought that stretched several months. Due to these aspects, Jones believes that one cannot single out Rooney as the top striker for the national team. The United forward recently became the recordholder for the national team with 50 goals.

"We have a lot of good strikers. You cannot pinpoint a specific striker as who is the best, but he is up there. There has been a lot of speculation about him but he is Manchester United's captain, England's captain, the all-time scoring record holder and it speaks for itself. He is tough in training. Wayne is Wayne. He is a finisher, talker, scorer, leader and is aggressive. You need those players in your team,” said Jones, who will be looking to match the expectations of his club teammate Chris Smalling in terms of defensive performances.
