Wayne Rooney has been disappointing of late with new signing Anthony Martial

Wayne Rooney has been disappointing of late with new signing Anthony Martial already grabbing the headlines with three Premier League goals from just two games.

Rooney is yet to open his account in the league this season and this is despite playing in more than 450 minutes so far. He has been much more prolific in other competitions. His best performances, though, have been with the England national team. He has seven goals in just eight games for the England team and this has seen him become the record goal scorer for the national team. His position in Louis van Gaal’s team has been subjected to much debate.

Martial, on the other hand, has been the preferred striking choice upfront ever since he came to the club for a transfer fee of around £ 37 million. Even at just 19 years of age, it is impressive to see the French international work his magic. The club’s former assistant manager Steve Round, though, says that there is no reason why the partnership cannot be built between Rooney and Martial. In United’s long history, it has all been about partnerships. The likes of Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole remain firmly in the memories of United supporters.

Round reckons that Rooney and Martial can repeat the same in this decade."I don't think playing behind Martial would frustrate Rooney at all. Wayne can play with anybody.Wayne can play right up at the top and Martial can drift out to the left or right. Wayne could play as No 10 and Martial could ride up front as a No 9. I don't think it will be an issue at all. I think it will be quite a potent strike force. Wayne will form partnerships with all sorts of strikers,” said Round. Rooney will be looking to break his league duck against Sunderland.
